2019 FIBA World Cup u19 Philippine Team

Can we surpass the 13th place finish of the u16 reiteration?

What are the things that we should do to assure ourselves of a decent showing in this tourney?

Who are the key additions, be it players or personnel, that we must consider to strengthen the team?

Congrats, Batang Gilas, for making it to the World's. Goodluck and may you have performances worthy of praise from the international basketball community...!

Foreign visiting teams vs. Philippines NT (Exhibition Games/Series)

I've been doing some research about foreign teams visiting the Philippines and playing against the Philippine national team.

Former PBA slam dunk champion Joey Mente has died after succumbing to a lingering illness.

According to a report posted on Spin.ph, the former San Miguel Beer player died Wednesday after losing a bout against cancer.

He was 42.

The 5-foot-10 Samar native was best known for his hang-time moves, despite being under 6 feet, even during his collegiate years with Lyceum.

He later played for the Iloilo Megavoltz in the defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) before being picked by San Miguel 10th overall in the 2001 PBA Draft.

Mente crowned himself as the 2001 slam dunk champion and became part of the San Miguel team that won the 2001 all-Filipino and 2005 Fiesta conferences.

He later spent his playing years with Welcoat, now known as Rain Or Shine, from 2006 to 2008.

Philippines 3x3 Team for the 2020 Olympics

Title explains it all. I can't seem to find the previous 3x3 threads so mods are free to merge this with that one if they feel like it.

So we're going to send a team that will try to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Anyone have the details on the qualification procedures?

The leader of the team is Kobe Paras (6'6) which means we need two more guards and a big man (6'8+). Any ideas?

My roster:
Paras - 6'6
Edu - 6'9
JGL - 6'1
Ildefonso - 6'3

Which team in the UAAP/NCAA has the best player skills development program?

“The player development is actually what I think is my burden as a coach when I went around in the US and in Belgrade. Sino ba dapat ang magturo sa atin dito so that the kids would know the basics of basketball, position of the feet, passing, reading and reacting, lahat ng skills na tinuturo individually, hindi lang as a class. We have very good teachers like Coach Ronnie Magsanoc. Their attention to detail is similar to how Serbians really put stock in how players even move. They go down to the little things like where your knee should be facing when in a defensive stance,” Bo Perasol -taken from Humblebolas interview

The other returning clubs from 2017’s tournament are Mono Vampire Basketball Club (Thailand) and Petrochimi (Iran). Last year was Mono Vampire’s first ever appearance in the tournament and they finished at 6th place. Petrochimi finished in 4th place last year after a 3rd place finish in 2016.

The other teams that will be participating in the FIBA Asia Champions Cup 2018 are the Liaoning Flying Leopards (China), Toyota Tokyo (Japan), SK Knights (Korea), San Miguel Beermen (Philippines), and Pauian Archiland (Chinese Taipei).

The action that is expected to erupt in Thailand will be highly intense as these eight teams are the best clubs in each respective nation. Even though they will be playing under the name of their clubs, expect everyone to play for with limitless effort for national pride as they aim to win the FIBA Asia Champions Cup 2018.

I think Robert Bolick deserves his own thread. He even scored 50 points in NCAA, and i think he will be the main point guard come 2023 FIBA World Cup.

To Improve Philippine Basketball, Make Soccer/Futbol Popular

On the 26:30 minute mark, Jason Kidd talks about how his first love "soccer" instilled in him the mindset of "pass move, pass move." A lot of people know about how Steve Nash loves to play soccer, but I was surprised to know that Jason Kidd also loved playing soccer. It's no coincidence that 2 of the best all-time pass-first PGs played soccer, it was because of it.

When Coach Tab talks about how European countries (and South American) play a style of basketball predicated on passing, off-the-ball movement and one-step-ahead mentality, I think soccer has a lot to do with it. Players coming from soccer-playing countries develop that skill and instinct of movement without the ball and passing it until the best shot becomes available. Our adversary South Korea who also plays a lot of soccer, uses those skills plus great stamina (also developed in soccer) to get our number.

It is a great "base" sport meaning a sport that can be first taught to really young children (low learning curve and minimal equipment needed). It is also a sport that requires early training because of it's technical aspects and the need to learn "first touch" early. If soccer becomes popular in the Philippines, it won't only add to the quality of our basketball players, it will also lessen the dilution of our basketball talent pool because players who don't have the size could concentrate on soccer. It's about time we become a country of more than basketball, research has shown that multi-sport athletes perform better and are less injury prone than single-sport athletes. It will also give a chance for our elite athletes who does not have the height to excel in a sport internationally, I'm sure there are countless who could've been great at soccer but persisted on basketball.

Philippines 2020 Tokyo Olympics 3x3 qualifying

There are 2 ways Philippines can qualify for the 3x3 tournament, with their relaxed eligibility rules and our players capable in 3x3 setting. This might be our best shot at olympics..

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bask..._qualification

you can qualify via being top 3 in the world.. then winning one of three olympic qualifying tournaments

and another qualifying tournament wherethe teams can participate are teams who didnt qualify in the last two olympics..

November 30 and December 3 Team Pilipinas games
