Expectations this year are pretty high, top-three finish or bust for Smart Gilas. Past national teams have unrealistic expectations, including the 2007 team, and 2009 team. Here's my list of past national teams and their supposedly projected accomplishment.
1990 Jawo-led PBA team - Below expectations - silver medal. I expected this team to win the gold.
1994 SMB backed pba team - Below expectations - Fourth place. I expected this team to win the gold.
1998 Centennial team - Below expectations - Bronze. This team should've bagged silver in my book
2002 Busan team - Below expectations - Fourth place. Should've finished second behind China
2007 Chot Reyes coached team - Below expectations - 9th. I expected this team to be a semifinalist.
2009 Yeng Guiao disappointment team -Below expectations -8th. Yeng Guiao didn't coach to win the tournament.
2011 Smart Gilas -Above expectations - 4th. I expected this team to finish 5th.
2013 Smart Gilas 2 -I will expect Gilas 2 to finish 3rd or 4th in this year's FIBA-asia c'hips.
